Wines of 1838

1838 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Intense deep purple with red rim. Traditional upfront fruit style of Cabernet Sauvignon with lifted aromas of ripe red and black berry fruit with a hint of blueberry. The aromas of coffee, chocolates and aniseed provide further complexity on the nose. Full and vibrant fruit flavours of dark red and black berry are the highlight whilst more profound notes of freshly cut plum which fill the mid palate. Soft tannins go well with the elegant under lying taste of oak to make this a very approachable and easy drinking Cabernet. A very good quaffing wine that would be perfectly matched with roast lamb stuffed with garlic and Rosemary.

Fruit was sourced from several well-known growers in South Australia. The different sites allowed us to pick the fruit over a period of 2 weeks allowing each vineyard to develop differing characters to compliment each other. The result is intensely flavoured wines due to the care and attention these growers give them. This wine was fermented warm and received pump overs on a daily basis during their fermentation. Select parcels of the wine received aging with oak contact to add another level ofcomplexity without over powering the fruit.

1838 Reserve Shiraz 2021

Purple to crimson red around the edge. A fruit bomb in its infancy the nose exhibits dark fruit flavours of freshly cut plum and some blueberry while mocha, chocolate, licorice and subtle oak ensure a highly aromatic and voluptuous nose. The palate is quite velvety in texture, with amazing fruit concentration in its youth featuring plum, chocolate, licorice with a touch of spice, perfectly interwoven oak and the perfect level of fine grainy tannin give line and length.

Fruit was sourced from several well-known growers in South Australia from what was another great vintage in terms of quality although yields were down across the region. The different sites allowed us to pick the fruit over a extended period allowing each vineyard to develop differing characters to compliment each other and also allowed us at the winery to treat the parcels individually in small ferments with longer than usual skin contact, which is always ideal. The result is an outstanding wine with obvious time and care taken with it throughout the vinification process. This wine was fermented warm and received pump overs on a daily basis during fermentation. Aged in primarily old 2-3 year old oak to add another level of complexity without over powering the fruit.

1838 Reserve McLaren Vale Pinot Noir 2018

Freshly squeezed cherries and a hint of blueberry pie with layers of fruit followed by another layer of fruit, this is Australian Pinot upfront and honest. Red berry flavours flood the palate and persist with great length, a good zippy touch of acidity gives complexity whilst violets remind you just how pretty this wine is. This wine served best with a second glass or a light meal to ensure you don’t over power your palate as this is a wine to savour on its own with friends.

Fruit was sourced from a single vineyard in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia only a stone's throw from the border of the Adelaide hills region. The cool nature of this site allowed us to pick it a little later than most McLaren Vale vineyards as we really consider it to be part of the Hills region more than the vale. The result is intensely flavoured wines due to the care and attention these growers give them. This wine was fermented warm and received pump overs on a daily basis during their fermentation. The wine was aged in stainless steel with no oak contact to ensure only the fruit was the headline act here.
